Netherlands

With its iconic windmills and canal houses, the Netherlands is surprisingly agrarian for a country known for its cutting-edge innovation and futuristic design – nearly two thirds of its territory are given over to plant cultivation, which is best exemplified by its world-renowned tulips. The Netherlands is a cyclist’s paradise, too: the entire country (not just Amsterdam) is cut across by endless kilometres of cycling paths, with special long-distance routes designed for extended biking tours. Beyond the boisterous capital dotted with social “brown cafes” lie the enticing cities of Utrecht, Leiden, Rotterdam, and more.

Amsterdam

With its characteristic canals (UNESCO World Heritage) surrounded by narrow, low and crooked 17th-century houses, Amsterdam is, without a doubt, one of the most charming capital cities in Europe. The rich cultural life and a wide range of entertainment make Amsterdam a full-scale city which has managed to retain its small-town feel. With over 50 museums, of which many are famous across the globe, this city is a real treat for art-lovers: highlights include the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum.

Eindhoven

The future is bright for the city of light. Eindhoven is the Netherlands’ fifth largest city, a modern metropolis built up around a famous light bulb and lamp manufacturer. Aside from being a buzzing business hub, it’s a great weekend destination with pedestrian streets packed with shopping, eating and drinking possibilities. Hire a bike and join the hundreds of cyclists who explore this green, accessible city on two wheels. Culture vultures, head for the Van Abbemuseum, one of the top modern art collections in the world. Combine this with a successful football team and a wacky conference centre situated in a flying saucer and you’ll find that Eindhoven has something for everyone.
