With an incredible history, vibrant neighborhoods and enough lip-licking grub to discover, it\u2019s a city that really draws you in\u00a0when visiting Portugal and leaves you wanting more, long after you\u2019re back at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it\u2019s your first time to the city, you\u2019ll probably have started prepping as soon as the tickets fall into your mailbox\u2026 that being said, if you\u2019re anything like me \u2013 you\u2019ll also be scurrying around at the last minute after forgetting all the key places you wanted to see! (I blame wine).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve never visited Lisbon, or Portugal for that matter, you\u2019re in for a treat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Take a look at some of the very best things to do and see on your first visit to Lisbon\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one of my favourite places to see in Lisbon (shhh, don\u2019t tell the others). Although not as iconic as, say, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it really is integral to the identity of Lisbon and a truly beautiful lift. There are not many times when I imagined I\u2019d call a lift beautiful \u2013 but this is one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nestled in the Baixa neighbourhood of Lisbon, Santa Justa gets busy very quickly and often lines start to appear later in the morning\/afternoon. visit early \u2013 watch the city come to life and enjoy! These things to do in Lisbon are just the best, especially when the sun is shining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.) Ride Tram 28<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tram 28 is to Lisbon what red telephone\u00a0boxes are to London, it\u2019s a tram that you\u2019ll almost certainly see but should also ride. It\u2019s a great place to wander and see one of the oldest parts of the city, again, just make sure to pack some comfy shoes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.)\u00a0Torre de Belem and Monument to the Discoveries<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Almost fairytale-like to explore, Torre de Belem has a much more hard-edged history that most of us realise and one of the things to do in Lisbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8.) Explore Sintra<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Cascais is about 30 minutes by train (or you can drive over) from the city itself and is a great place to chill out and relax in the town or on the sandy beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve never visited Lisbon, or Portugal for that matter, you\u2019re in for a treat.  \u00a0Take a look at some of the very best things to do and see on your first visit to Lisbon\u00a0 1.)\u00a0Santa Justa Elevator This is one of my favourite places to see in Lisbon (shhh, don\u2019t tell the others). Although not as iconic as, say, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it really is integral to the identity of Lisbon and a truly beautiful lift. There are not many times when I imagined I\u2019d call a lift beautiful \u2013 but this is one! Nestled in the Baixa neighbourhood of Lisbon, Santa Justa gets busy very quickly and often lines start to appear later in the morning\/afternoon. visit early \u2013 watch the city come to life and enjoy! These things to do in Lisbon are just the best, especially when the sun is shining. 2.) Ride Tram 28 This is one of the most famous things to do in Lisbon. Tram 28 is to Lisbon what red telephone\u00a0boxes are to London, it\u2019s a tram that you\u2019ll almost certainly see but should also ride. The route of Tram 28 takes you through some of the oldest parts of the city. Embrace its rickety tracks (bumps and all) and enjoy these historic trams first thing in the morning or late afternoon. No one likes getting on a hot, crowded, un-airconditioned tram! 3.) Start your evening with a\u00a0Ginjinha This traditional drink is a firm favourite in Lisbon and one you should definitely try (for completeness sake, of course). Made from sour cherry, you\u2019ll see it served all across the city. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is nestled within the historic district of\u00a0Bel\u00e9m, where you literally can\u2019t miss it! Head inside to explore some of the awe-inspiring architecture and stunning history of this gorgeous place. Again, as I\u2019ve said before \u2013 arrive early and try to avoid weekends for fewer crowds. 4.) See the sunset at Miradouro da Gra\u00e7a One great thing about Lisbon is that its hilly nature gives way to lots of little Miradouro\u2019s (terraces) that have sprung up all across the city. Head across to  Miradouro da Gra\u00e7a for some lovely views across Lisbon and even Lisbon Castle itself. It\u2019s a gorgeous place to sit back, relax and enjoy a well-earned rest\u2026 \u2026 All whist planning the other\u00a0things to do in Lisbon.\u00a0 5.)\u00a0Visit Castelo de S\u00e3o Jorge Perched on top of the highest hill in Alfama,\u00a0Castelo de S\u00e3o Jorge has had a diverse past, being home to the Romans, the\u00a0Visigoths and even the very first king! It\u2019s a great place to wander and see one of the oldest parts of the city, again, just make sure to pack some comfy shoes! 6.)\u00a0Torre de Belem and Monument to the Discoveries Almost fairytale-like to explore, Torre de Belem has a much more hard-edged history that most of us realise and one of the things to do in Lisbon. Perched on its own within the Tejo riverfront, it was built to protect the port and was the point where lots of explorers started their journey to the new world. Nowadays, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is well worth an explore of its own \u2013 thankfully minus those 16th Century battles for the harbour! Make sure to plan your trip early (and if you\u2019re not keen on crowds, maybe avoid weekends), it\u2019s a very popular site with fewer people visiting first thing in the morning. 7.) Explore the neighbourhoods, Alfama Lisbon is a city that\u2019s made up of many exciting districts, which is perfect for us travellers to go and explore but not so ideal when you\u2019re visiting for a short period of time when there are so many to choose from. One place you have to visit is the Alfama Neighbourhood, it\u2019s technically one of the oldest parts of the city even though it was originally outside the city walls some 700 years ago. Pack a comfy pair of shoes and get exploring the neighbourhood\u2019s winding and hilly\u00a0streets. You\u2019ll have earned\u00a0your lunch (or dinner)\u00a0after walking this neighbourhood!\u00a0 8.) Explore Sintra You\u2019ve probably seen how much I love\u00a0Sintra\u2026\u00a0but just\u00a0in case you haven\u2019t, let me tell you again! This place is gorgeous. Around 30 minutes from the city itself, it\u2019s an incredible area to see the historic palaces and castles that sit elegantly on the hills. It\u2019s easily reached by hiring a car, catching the train or even with organised tours from Lisbon itself. It\u2019s a must-see out of all the\u00a0things to do in Lisbon (and around the area). 9.) Head across to Cascais Cascais was once the holidaying spot of the rich and famous \u2013 Imagine it like Portugal\u2019s version of Monte Carlo. Cascais is about 30 minutes by train (or you can drive over) from the city itself and is a great place to chill out and relax in the town or on the sandy beaches. Don\u2019t forget to visit the\u00a0Boca do Inferno point to a great vantage point to see the cliffs and formations that make this region so rugged and beautiful. 10.)\u00a0Eat A Pastel de Nata Don\u2019t leave Lisbon without trying these! It\u2019s almost criminal to have visited and not gorged on at least one of the delicious sweet tarts. Head over to\u00a0Pastets de Belem\u00a0for some of the best (and iconic) in town! With such a high footfall you\u2019re almost guaranteed a completely fresh (and still slightly warm) Pastel de Nata from Past\u00e9is de Bel\u00e9m.
